How's Your Balance?

Updated: Jan 14, 2021

When I meet with a client, I usually ask them how their balance is. Most clients tell me their balance is fine. When we start to do some exercises, they usually have some trouble and say “I didn’t realize I had an issue with balance.” We then add balance exercsies to our routine.

We often hear about the importance of cardio, strength training and flexibility but not as often do we hear about the importance of practicing balance. Balance declines as we age due to loss of muscle strength and joint flexibility, as well as reduced vision and reaction time.

We can maintain or even improve our balance by performing certain movements. Here are a few of the many benefits to practicing balance.

1-It can help prevent falls and injuries

2-It’s good for your posture

3-Improves coordination

4-It increases your muscular power

5-Reverses age related loss of balance

Practicing Tai chi, yoga and pilates are all ways to improve balance. Here are 8 exercises you can do to practice balance.

  1. Heel Toe Walk

  2. Tree Pose

  3. Single Leg T Stance

  4. Single Leg Dead lift

  5. Dead bug on bosu

  6. Squats on bosu

  7. Planks with Flying Plane Arms

  8. Rolling Forearm Side Plank

At first, many of these exercises may be tough if you haven't been practicing your balance regularly. If you continue to practice, you will see improvement!!
